About Windsurfing in Fuerteventura

Windsurfing is a major sport on the island of Fuerteventura.

The incredible weather conditions of the island: the wind, the sun all year long, the quality it’s water and beaches, which were recently classified as “biosphere reserve” in 2009 on the "http://www.unesco.org/new/fileadmin/MULTIMEDIA/HQ/SC/pdf/sc_mab_BR2012.pdf", attracts passionate windsurfers from all around the world.

After being patented in 1970 by Jim Drake (1929 – 2012), an American aeronautics engineer, windsurfing knows a quick growth around US, Europe and Australia thanks to its accessibility and to the freedom sensations it procures to the sailors.

Apart from some independent initiatives that are difficult to specify, windsurfing mainly arrived in Canary islands and more specifically in Fuerteventura in the late 70’s, and has been promoted in a first time during a windsurf competition on the north of the island in 1980.

1986, the PBA (Professional Board Association) which was the first world’s windsurfing tour now named as PWA (Professional Windsurfing Association ), organized the first major speed competition in Fuerteventura with sailors coming from all around the world. Fuerteventura’s wind allowed to set up new records in all categories, and allowed to Pascal Maka to break the record on the water with a speed of 38.86 knots.

Since then the island of Fuerteventura is known for the wind, windsurfers come all year long to practice this beautiful sport and professional competitors regularly come to train and compete on the island like Jurgen Honscheid, windsurf champion coming from Germany. Especially the north of the island offers a large diversity of conditions which allows to windsurfers at all level to enjoy the best conditions, either beginner or advanced wave sailor everyone can find a spot to enjoy sailing at the best.
