being patented in 1970 by Jim Drake (1929 – 2012), an American aeronautics
engineer, windsurfing knows a quick growth around US, Europe and Australia

sailors.
Apart
from some independent initiatives that are difficult to specify, windsurfing
mainly arrived in Canary islands and more specifically in Fuerteventura in the
late 70’s, and has been promoted in a first time during a windsurf competition
on the north of the island in 1980.
1986,
the PBA (Professional Board Association) which was the first world’s
windsurfing tour now named as PWA (Professional Windsurfing Association ),
organized the first major speed competition in Fuerteventura with sailors
coming from all around the world. Fuerteventura’s wind allowed to set up new
records in all categories, and allowed to Pascal Maka to break the record on
the water with a speed of 38.86 knots.
